From missed schooling to a college place

When YP arrived

YP joined us after two previous placement breakdowns. They had been out of education for over a year, were experiencing low mood and had little trust in professionals.

Support provided

  • Weekly key-work sessions with a consistent worker
  • Psychological oversight from Dr Costa and a bespoke wellbeing plan
  • Practical re-engagement with education through a local college advisor
  • Structured routine, cooking sessions and budgeting practice

Outcome

YP completed a Level 2 Health & Social Care course, moved on to Level 3, and now lives in their own supported tenancy near their college. They still visit the home for coffee.

"For the first time somewhere actually felt like mine. Staff didn't give up when I pushed back, they just kept showing up."

Building a career from a difficult start

When YP arrived

YP came into our care shortly after leaving a residential children's home. They had experienced significant adversity and needed a highly structured environment with clear boundaries.

Support provided

  • Trauma-informed key-working focused on emotional regulation
  • Employment coaching, CV support and interview preparation
  • Weekly life-skills group, cooking, cleaning, tenancy readiness
  • Support to open a bank account and manage first wages

Outcome

YP secured a construction apprenticeship at 17 and progressed into full-time employment. They moved on into private rented accommodation at 19 and are now supporting a younger sibling.

"I didn't think anyone would take a chance on me. Willoughby helped me get through the door, the rest I had to do, but they made me believe I could."

Mental health
Case reference MENTAL

Stabilising mental health, then moving forward

When YP arrived

YP arrived following a mental-health crisis and hospital admission. They required close coordination with CAMHS transitioning into adult services, and a calm, predictable home environment.

Support provided

  • Daily check-ins and a low-stimulation bedroom set-up
  • Direct psychological input and joint working with CAMHS/AMHS teams
  • Gradual re-introduction to social activity through a local art group
  • Support with medication routines and GP appointments

Outcome

YP has been stable in the community for over a year, has begun a part-time creative course, and successfully moved on to a shared house with two friends met through the art group.

"The staff knew when to push me and when to just sit with me. That difference is why I'm still here and doing okay."

New country, new language, new future

When YP arrived

YP arrived as an unaccompanied asylum-seeking young person with limited English and no family in the UK. They needed a safe home while navigating immigration, education and cultural adjustment.

Support provided

  • Weekly ESOL classes and homework support in the home
  • Advocacy through the immigration and Home Office process
  • Introduction to a local community group from their home country
  • Full life-skills programme adapted to existing strengths

Outcome

YP received leave to remain, achieved GCSE-equivalent qualifications in English and Maths, and is now studying engineering at college. They have moved on to semi-independent accommodation nearby.

"When I came here I had nothing. Now I have a college, friends, and a plan. Willoughby is my second family."

Case reference SAFETY

From protective custody to a place at a prestigious university

When YP arrived

YP came to Willoughby Place after being taken into protective custody due to abuse within the family home. YP was at risk of being taken abroad and forced into marriage because of their sexuality. Growing up, YP had not been allowed friends and was expected to cook and clean for the family.

Support provided

  • A safe, settled home where YP could live openly and be themselves
  • Consistent key-working to build trust and healthy relationships
  • Full education support, tutoring, applications and university guidance
  • Celebrating firsts, including YP's first birthday and first Christmas with us

Outcome

YP formed strong friendships, thrived in education and earned a place at a prestigious university, where they are now going into their second year. YP has moved on to independent living but remains part of the Willoughby Place family, returning for dinner whenever they are in London.

"There's no way I would have got to university had I not come to you. Willoughby Place saved my life."
